Created in 1999, the FAPESP Program for Research on Biodiversity Characterization, Conservation, Restoration and Sustainable Use – BIOTA-FAPESP – adopted the definition of biodiversity and the premises of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) right from the beginning. Consequently, the scope of the research supported by the Program involved all types of diversity – from genetic to biome, all types of organisms – terrestrial, marine or freshwater, under all possible approaches – from biological to chemical characterization, from microscope to satellite images, from ecosystem structure and composition to functioning and landscape ecology, including also the human dimensions of biodiversity conservation and sustainable use.

In honor of the program’s 20th anniversary, we have organized the 8 webinars presented below to synthesize the impact the Program has had in advancing scientific knowledge, improving public policies, identifying economic potential, building human resources, and engaging internationally with significant contributions to the CBD and the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services/IPBES.  The webinars are part of the process of building the new Science Plan & Strategies for the next decade of the BIOTA-FAPESP Program, and we subdivided them into themes to meet the virtual format of discussions.
